What is TISAX and Why It Matters
TISAX sets clear information security standards for OEMs and suppliers, helping protect sensitive data across the automotive industry. However, customer contracts and RFQs increasingly require TISAX compliance before work can begin. Therefore, to join Tier 1 and OEM programmes, organisations must show strong controls and evidence. As a result, compliance matters.
Understanding TISAX
TISAX stands for Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange. It was created to help automotive organisations demonstrate that they properly protect sensitive information. This includes technical data, customer information, and prototype details shared across complex supply chains.
Instead of each customer running their own audit, TISAX provides a single, recognised assessment approach. This reduces repeat audits and allows assessment results to be securely shared between trusted partners using the ENX platform.
Why TISAX matters to suppliers
TISAX is no longer optional for many suppliers. OEMs and Tier 1 organisations regularly require a valid TISAX result before allowing access to projects or systems. In many cases, contracts and RFQs will not proceed without evidence of TISAX compliance.
TISAX helps customers trust that suppliers can handle information securely. It shows that independent audit providers define, implement, and check controls. For suppliers, this approach builds credibility and supports long-term relationships across the automotive industry. As a result, everyone benefits from a more secure environment.
The role of Assessment Levels (AL)
TISAX uses Assessment Levels (AL) to match the depth of assessment to the level of information risk. The higher the risk, the stronger the assessment requirements.
AL1 – Self‑assessment
Organisations mainly use AL1 for internal purposes. An auditor only confirms that a self-assessment is complete. Auditors do not review the content in detail or check evidence. OEMs do not accept AL1 results or use them in official TISAX assessments. Consequently, suppliers often aim for higher levels.
AL2 – Independent plausibility check
AL2 is the most common assessment level for automotive suppliers. It applies where information has high protection needs. The audit provider reviews the self-assessment, checks supporting evidence, and interviews key staff, usually through remote methods. Suppliers then share AL2 results on the TISAX exchange platform. Additionally, this process increases transparency between partners.
AL3 – Full verification and on‑site audit
Suppliers select AL3 when information protection needs are very high, such as for strictly confidential data or prototypes. The auditor verifies controls in depth, including on-site inspections, observations, and detailed interviews. As a result, AL3 provides the highest level of assurance.
Higher assessment levels automatically cover the requirements of lower levels. For example, AL3 also meets AL2 expectations. Therefore, choosing a higher level can simplify compliance.
How TISAX fits into the assessment process
The TISAX process follows three steps: registration, assessment, and exchange. Organisations define their scope and objectives, complete the assessment at the required level, and then securely share the results with customers. Usually, a successful assessment result remains valid for three years. In addition, regular reviews help maintain compliance.
Why TISAX drives confidence
TISAX gives OEMs confidence that suppliers protect information properly. For suppliers, it provides a clear, repeatable way to demonstrate control, reduce audit effort, and stay competitive in a demanding industry. Ultimately, TISAX supports strong partnerships and business growth.
